RUMICHACA BRIDGE CLOSED FOR BRIEF PERIOD BETWEEN ECUADOR AND COLOMBIA DUE TO CIVIL UNREST

Officials indicated yesterday that a Colombian national in a vehicle with Ecuadorian license plates was physically and verbally assaulted while driving in Ipiales, Colombia near the border with Ecuador, believing the driver to be Ecuadorian. Commercial traders from both countries became so irate that they closed the bridge down for over70 minutes which cause chaos and delays for all transportation and nearly broke out into violence. Tires were set ablaze and finally the protest calmed as officials took control. However, the tense situation in this borderland heightened as Ecuadorian immigration police rounded up numerous COlombian peasants who work in Ecuador and began to process them for deportation.

We continue with our advisory of recommending no or limited travel to the northern provinces bordering Ecuador at the present time. Crime and the potential of military involvement and FARC activities remains a constant threat.
